If We’re Happier Working From Home, Should We Do It More Often?

When Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer banned employees from working from home, many flinched — especially since the tech industry is known for its flexible work-from-home policies.

Technology is, after all, what allows us to work from home, and she was going against the grain. Even though the total number of Americans in the workforce declined between 2005 and 2012, our telecommuting workforce increased by 80 percent over the same period.

Still, many were skeptical that telecommuting could really work for companies and employees. So in 2013, Nicholas Bloom, a Stanford University economics professor, answered the nagging question — are work-from-home employees actually working?
